Content is King–But not the Only Key to SEO Success

A favorite saying in the Serch Engine Optimization community is that “Content is King”, implying that content is the key to driving highly visible rankings on the major search engines and SEO success. And as a general statement, it’s true.  The search engines do value well written content as the foundation for how they decide which sites to rank higher.

Although website content is important, it is not the only factor in determining high rankings and suceessful search engine optimization.  thing. Site content needs to be written for a particular audience or target market, and be based on the language they use when searching for your goods and services.  And the more you know about what your customers are searching for the better you are able to provide the content they are looking for.

But there are a number of othe factors that you must focus on in order to rank highly on the search engines. There are only 10 spots on the first page of the search engines for any keyword search phrase.  And there are man ywebsites vying for those positions.  Depending on the number of firms trying to attain those spots, the age of their sites and how hard they are willing to work to get there, it could be a difficult task to get on the first page.  But since 98.9% of all search engine clicks on organic rankings occur on listing on the first page, it is well worth the effort if online marketing is a key element of your go-to-market strategy.

Below are a set of items that need to be done in order to successfully optimize your site for SEO.

1. Keyword research

2. Add content to your site that contains your targeted keywords

3. Add meta tags and titles to your pages

4. Use Header tags to highlight content

5. Setup internal links

6. Build external links

In conclusion, the best way to have a successful website is to implement each of the above search engine optimization strategies before you design your website and then measure the results on how customers found you site with web analytics after your site goes live.
